It’s no secret that Mississippi is filled with great food and friendly residents. Even better, you can usually find both in the same place, which is exactly the case with the Dinner Bell. The local favorite has been serving up authentic southern cuisine for years. And while the food is amazing, it’s not the only thing that sets the Dinner Bell apart from other restaurants; it’s the way the food is served that really makes for one memorable dining experience.
The Dinner Bell is located on 5th Avenue in McComb’s downtown Depot District in a former home that dates back to the 1920s.
Even though the restaurant didn't move to its present location until 1959, it was first opened nearly a century ago.
Over the years, The Dinner Bell has become a favorite of both locals and tourists, attracting visitors from every state, Canada, Mexico, and almost every continent. So, just what is it about The Dinner Bell that diners can’t get enough of?
Meals at The Dinner Bell are served family-style on large lazy Susans in the middle of round tables, making it one of the only restaurants of its kind in Mississippi.
And those lazy Susans…they’re filled with platters and bowls overflowing with every delicious Southern dish you could possibly think of.
Heaping helpings of fried chicken, fried eggplant, chicken and dumplings, rice and gravy, vegetables, and homemade cornbread are always on the menu (and within hands reach).
Meat selections change daily and include everything from fried catfish to meatloaf.
Further adding to the unique dining experience, customers are seated with friends and strangers alike, encouraging the southern hospitality Mississippians are known for.
If you really want to experience all The Dinner Bell has to offer, visit on a Sunday when the fare is even more plentiful than usual and includes a variety of desserts.
The only thing customers can't seem to agree on is which of the Dinner Bell's two specialties is the best - the fried chicken...
or the fried eggplant.
Want to decide for yourself? Visit the Dinner Bell at 229 5th Avenue in McComb Tuesday – Sunday, from 11 am – 2 pm.
