These Mississippi restaurants may not look like much on the outside, but inside you’ll find some of the best food in the state.
1. Gibbes Old Country Store, Learned
Gibbes first opened its doors in 1892, serving as the local general store. Eventually, long family-style tables were added, creating a makeshift restaurant, which has since become known for its mouthwatering steaks.
2. Cooley’s Hamburgers, Waynesboro
While this place doesn’t have a website or official Facebook page, locals know Cooley’s is the place to go for a great burger. And according to "Only In Mississippi" readers, the only thing that beats the burgers are the low prices.
3. Long’s Fish Camp, Enterprise
You can find catfish practically anywhere in Mississippi, but if it’s the best you’re looking for, you’ll want to visit this Enterprise fish house. According to customer reviews, Long’s hushpuppies, Cole Slaw, and all-you-can-eat catfish are the best around. Heading to Long’s on the weekend? Be sure to get there early; the place is known to fill up fast.
4. Hamburger House, Mize
Another suggestion by our readers, Hamburger House may not look like much on the outside but the burgers are said to be out of this world. Alongside the variety of burgers that fill the menu, you’ll find several southern favorites, including a roast beef po’ boy, hamburger steaks, and chicken-fried steak.
5. White Front Café, Rosedale
The size of this legendary cafe doesn’t even begin to compare to the huge reputation it’s garnered over the years. Known by locals simply as "Joe’s hot tamale place," it should come as no surprise that this famous eatery serves hot tamales. In fact, the café’s motto is, "You can get anything you want to eat, just so long as what you want to eat is a tamale."
6. Abe’s Grill, Corinth
The epitome of southern hospitality, guests at Abe’s are served delicious, home cooked food, which is only rivaled by the friendly staff. The Corinth staple has been serving the area since 1974, making it the oldest diner on Highway 72, and once you’ve tried the food, you’ll see why Abe’s has stood the test of time.
7. Friendship House Restaurant, Aberdeen
Look up the Friendship House on customer review websites and you’ll see the phrase "best catfish" repeatedly, but it’s not just the customers that have made that claim. The Aberdeen restaurant, along with eight others in the southeastern U.S., was included in the "South’s Best Catfish" list by Taste of the South magazine.
8. Stafford’s Big Burger, WestPoint
Stafford’s Big Burger is the place to go if you’re in the mood for, you guessed it, a big burger. But don’t think that’s all you’ll find at this West Point eatery. Pitt-smoked barbecue, authentic southern cuisine, and hand-dipped milkshakes are among Stafford’s specialties.
9. North Side Café, Macon
You won’t find much on the Internet about this Macon eatery…aside from great customer reviews that is. One customer even referred to North Side’s burgers as the "best in the county."
10. Edd’s Drive-In, Pascagoula
The exterior isn’t the only thing that hasn’t really changed since Edd’s first opened in 1953. The local staple still serves the same delicious fare, which includes hot dogs, hamburgers, chili dogs, and milkshakes. Winner of Pascagoula’s "Best Burger" award, Edd’s is the place to go for a great meal and a dose of nostalgia.
