Anyone who says candy stores are just for kids has clearly never been to The Pecan House in McHenry, Mississippi. Aptly named, the decades-old shop specializes in Mississippi-grown pecans, selling them in practically every form imaginable. In addition to pecans, the expansive shop carries a huge assortment of candies and other sweet treats as well as gifts. Take a look:

This is the Pecan House in McHenry, MS. The family-run shop has been operated by the Shoemakes since opening in 1984.

And while many things have changed over the years, a few have stayed the same, including the recipes used to make many of the shop’s sweets.

Here in Mississippi, we love Dairy Queen, but have you ever stopped and asked, “where is the oldest Dairy Queen in Mississippi?” You might think that every Dairy Queen in our state is the same; however, that’s not necessarily true. There’s one Dairy Queen that stands out from the rest for several reasons. First of all, it no longer operates under the Dairy Queen name. And secondly, it’s been slinging burgers and ice cream for over 75 years! Have you figured out the local gem that we’re featuring today? It’s none other than Phillips Drive-In in Laurel. Phillips Drive-In has been a Laurel staple since opening in 1948 as a Dairy Queen.

In the 1960s, the eatery underwent a huge change – it parted ways with the Dairy Queen franchise.
