These days, a drive-thru restaurant is never too far away. However, there aren’t many that have been around decades – and there’s only one that dates all the way back to 1947. Located in Hernando, Velvet Cream is one of the oldest drive-thru restaurants in Mississippi. Serving up classic fast food eats and sweets, it’s no surprise that the eatery still has cars lining up around the corner. Take a look:
This is Velvet Cream in Hernando.
Opened for business on July 23, 1947, it's one of the oldest drive-thrus in Mississippi.
It’s also one of the oldest, continuously-run (and most popular) restaurants in DeSoto County.
It started off as a small 400-square-foot hamburger stand with just a walk-up window. In 1977, a drive-thru was added, which, at the time, was an "unheard of concept in the mid-south."
According to the eatery’s website, "While the invention of the drive thru is credited two years earlier in 1975, Velvet Cream had one in the mid-south area six months before the larger, chain fast food restaurants experimented with their own versions. When the drive thru first opened, employees frequently had to go outside and explain how to place an order. The patrons of the day were used to drive-up service, but drive-thru service was new altogether."
Velvet Cream was a local favorite from day one, especially among area teenagers. And as the customer base grew, so did the menu.
Today, the self-proclaimed "burger bazaar and ice cream emporium," features a huge menu that spans an entire wall!
The tasty selection includes a slew of frozen sweet treats, like hand-dipped cones, Italian ice, slushes, milkshakes, and more. All products combined, there are over 250 flavors to choose from!
Burgers are also a big part of the menu.
Far from your typical burgers, these are "tailor made to include things not normally associated with burgers."
