Nelson Cheese and Deli is a neighborhood cheese shop beloved by locals in St. Paul's Como Park neighborhood. When I was a student at nearby Hamline University, sandwiches from Nelson's were a staple in my diet, and I still go back to get my regular Santa Fe fix. You definitely have to check out this venerable deli for yourself!
Nelson Cheese and Deli in St. Paul was opened in 1980 by the fifth-generation scion of a cheesemaking family.
Ever since, locals and destination diners, alike, have been flocking to this corner for Nelson's cheeses, cheese curds, and, perhaps even more, its sandwiches.
Nelson sandwich shop is small, with most of the building given over to its kitchens and preparation spaces.
Its retail space is only open to the public for a few hours a day, over lunch.
During that time, though, folks line up for the sandwiches.
You can order one of several specialty deli sandwiches or one of the hot sandwiches from the Nelson Cheese and Deli menu hanging on the wall.
Or you can build your own, choosing from a broad selection of meats, cheeses, and toppings.
Whatever you order, it's sure to be a deli masterpiece.
People love - seriously LOVE - Nelson's Reubens, and we think they are definitely good!
As I mentioned, though, at Nelson's, personally, I'm a Santa Fe guy. That "caliente sauce" gets me every time!
