When thinking of iconic foods in Minnesota, lobster rolls may not be the first thing that springs to mind. But thanks to the cult following that Smack Shack’s succulent sandwiches have gained, its lobster rolls are a paragon of the Twin Cities food scene. Here's more on the iconic Smack Shack lobster roll and why you'll want to try one ASAP.
Smack Shack traces its roots to 2010, when it was nothing but a lobster roll-slinging food truck. Love for its lobster rolls allowed Smack Shack to open its first brick-and-mortar location in the North Loop neighborhood of Minneapolis.
In addition to its main Minneapolis restaurant, Smack Shack now also has a location in Bloomington and outposts at MSP airport and Rosedale mall.
Smack Shack rocks two kinds of lobster rolls. The original is griddled milk bread stuffed with chilled lobster salad, cucumbers, and tarragon.
Or you can opt for the Connecticut-style roll, which is warm lobster salad, tossed in butter with lemon and chives, in a warm, split-top bun.
Of course, with a full restaurant, Smack Shack isn’t just lobster rolls anymore.
Folks flock in for dishes like lobster mac and cheese.
If you’re feeling a splurge coming on, spring for a Maine-style lobster bake.
Or scale the grand shack tower.
On weekends, Smack Shack also serves brunch with seafood dishes front and center, like its crab Benedict.
Don’t pass up one of the full bar’s world-class bloody marys.
Guess what! You don’t actually have to go to Smack Shack to get one of its lobster rolls. Back when it was just a food truck, Smack Shack partnered with The 1029 Bar in Northeast Minneapolis to serve its food during winter months. Today, thanks to that early partnership, you can still get several Smack Shack staples, including lobster rolls, at The 1029.
With more than a decade’s worth of diners clamoring for it, it’s pretty clear that the Smack Shack lobster roll’s cult following is well deserved. Have you tried it? Which style do you prefer - original or Connecticut? What’s another iconic Minnesota dish with a cult following?
