It’s time to break up with Chipotle and start a new love affair with one of these delicious taco stops across Massachusetts. These places run the gamut between hyper-authentic and Mexican fusion cuisine, but every single one serves up a fantastic taco.
1. El Pelón Taquería, Boston
El Pelón is the top-rated taco stop in Massachusetts on Yelp, so they must be doing something right. You can find this place in the Fenway neighborhood, and it’s a great place to catch a pre- or post-game meal after a Sox game. The shop itself is small, but there’s outdoor seating. Try the Americanos tacos, which come with fresh corn tortillas, dark chicken, salsa, lime and a drizzle of sour cream.
2. La Victoria Taqueria, Beverly
The food here is generously portioned, and the service is always friendly and efficient. One of the stars here is the guacamole: it's chunky, flavorful and perfectly made. Try the marinated chicken and pork carnitas tacos. Once you have your fill of those, this place also offers an amazing Torta sandwich.
3. Baja Charlie's, Lee
This awesome place specializes in Mexican food with California flair. Try the fish tacos, which each come with a hefty piece of battered fish and pico, avocado and cabbage slaw. Guests also rave about the mango enchiladas, so be sure to save room for a plate of those.
4. No Problemo, New Bedford
This place blends a grungy, hipster-chic atmosphere with a really solid Mexican food repertoire. Try the Super Taco, which is with a grilled tortilla filled with beef or chicken, your choice of beans, cheese, salsa, sour cream, cucumbers, roasted red peppers, scallions, lettuce and spinach. It’s cash only, so bring that paper.
5. Mesa Verde, Greenfield
The tacos here are messy, but fantastic. If you don’t mind grabbing a few extra napkins you’ll be very happy here. The interior is super colorful and cheerful, which perfectly compliments the bright flavors of the food. Try the Blackened Catfish taco, served with roasted red onions, pico de gallo, chipotle sour cream and Mexican rice.
6. El Comalito, Hampden County
This spot is a local favorite that deserves to be better known. El Comalito recently added dinner seating, so you can linger over their beautifully crafted tacos for as long as you like. Try the tacos de Lengua, served with the perfect balance of spices and a fresh zing of lime juice.
7. El Forastero Mexican Food, Agawam
This place strikes a nice balance between representing authentic Mexican flavors and serving accessible, recognizable dishes you'll love. The Tacos de Carne entrée is huge and delicious. It comes with refried beans, guacamole, salsa, spiced rice, and three amazing and meaty tacos.
8. Buena Y Sano, Springfield
This place serves awesome food at great prices. You can grab a full meal here for under $10, which you’ll be extra happy about once you sample the tacos. Plant lovers will swoon over their chickpea and red curry taco, while carnivores will go crazy for the BBQ chicken taco. This place has a few locations around Massachusetts, so check their website for the Buena Y Sano closest to you.
9. Quicks Hole, Woods Hole
Maybe you wouldn't expect to find mouthwatering tacos midway up the arm of the Cape, but Quicks Hole will change your mind. This place blends traditional New England fare with classic Mexican dishes. The result is unexpected combinations like the Lobster Taco that will blow your tastebuds away.
10. Tacos Mexico, Worcester
This local chain doesn't look like much, but it packs a big flavor punch. The menu is pretty huge, and you’re really craving something that’s not listed, the kitchen might even whip up something special just for you. The tastes here are authentic and bold, and the tacos are definitely some of the best around.
