What food is Massachusetts known for?! Only some of the most amazing food you can think of! Call us crazy, but we think that Massachusetts food includes some of the best homegrown dishes in the country. From surf to turf, this state is filled with foods that just taste like home. These are classic Massachusetts foods and dishes that are utterly delicious and are sure to have your mouth watering.
1. Fluffernutters
Fluff was invented right here in Massachusetts and it’s filled the peanut butter sandwiches of school children for generations. You can’t really describe a fluffernutter until you’ve had one.
2. Grilled Blueberry Muffins
If you haven’t ventured too far from Massachusetts, you may not know that griddled blueberry muffins are a distinctly New England phenomenon. They’re made by slicing a muffin in half and then weighing it down with a steak weight on the griddle until it’s perfectly crisp and dripping with butter.
3. Boston Baked Beans
If you grew up in Massachusetts, these are likely the only kind of baked beans you know. The thick molasses concoction is perfect as a breakfast side or even as a side with dinner.
4. And these Boston Baked Beans
Yup, these are still around. They're candy coated peanuts and they're strangely addictive.
5. Hoodsie Cups
What’s better than a tiny cup of creamy ice cream that you can toss in the beach cooler? How about the feeling of peeling off that paper lid? Or maybe shoveling that ice cream out with an adorable wooden spoon?
6. Apple Cider Doughnuts
I don’t know anyone who can resist the call of a fresh apple cider donut. While you can certainly find these in your local grocery store, they’re a completely different animal right out of the fryer at the cider mill or farm.
7. Cape Cod Potato Chips
These crispy chips are so ubiquitous that you can walk into practically any grocery store, sandwich shop or gas station and find shelf filled with the iconic, lighthouse-emblazoned bags.
8. Lobster Rolls
What would summer be without a lobster roll or nine? This delicious Massachusetts dish can be all dressed up with creamy mayo or topped with rich melted butter. Either way, it’s amazing.
9. Fried Clams
Stopping to get a basket (or bucket) of crispy fried clams is practically required on a road trip near the coast. And of course, there’s nothing like a perfectly seasoned fried clam roll.
10. Necco Wafers
They may not be the most popular candy on today’s shelves, but plenty of Bay Staters have fond memories of peeling open the paper on one of these candy rolls and plucking out color after color of the powdery, crunchy wafers. They might break your teeth but they’re oddly delicious.
11. Baked Stuffed Scrod
This is one decadent fish dish. Coated in seasoned panko breadcrumbs and traditionally stuffed with a melange of fish, butter, vegetables and Ritz crackers, you can’t get more scrumptious than this classic coastal dinner.
12. Scallops
Who could say no to a plate of perfectly seared and seasoned scallops? No Bay Stater I know. We like to pair them with a rich sauce or just season with salt and pepper and cook them until that beautiful golden-brown crust develops.
13. Grapenut Custard
While it may not be on most restaurant menus anymore, grapenut custard is a classic Massachusetts dessert that harkens back to a simpler time. While some traditional Bay State taverns and restaurants do offer it, you’re more likely to find it as an ice cream flavor these days.
14. Clam Chowder
Ah, clam chowder. Perhaps the most iconic Massachusetts food of all, this creamy soup has been filling the belies of Bay Staters since the state’s earlier days. Everyone has their favorite recipe or restaurant for this classic dish and it’s sure to be on the menu at most seafood joints.
