Prohibition has come and gone, but that doesn’t mean the speakeasy has gone extinct. There’s a secret cocktail bar in Hudson, Massachusetts that’s hidden behind a nondescript door in what appears to be a shoe shop. Here’s how to find it.
Less Than Greater Than is a hidden speakeasy in Hudson that is tucked away behind what appears to be a cobbler’s shop.
Incredibly, the cocktail bar was truly a secret for the first six months it was open. It had no social media accounts, no advertising, and did not announce its opening. The bar relied on its first few patrons literally stumbling in and discovering the establishment.
Here’s how it works: if you want to visit Less Than Greater Than, you need to look for New City Microcreamery and head around to the back. There, you’ll find a light switch next to a plain-looking gray door that appears to be entrance to a shoe shop.
If you switch the light switch, a peephole will appear in the door. You’ll be sized up before being asked if you’re there to "see the cobbler" and how many shoes you have, e.g. how large your party is.
Once you get inside, you’ll be treated the sight of a swanky yet comfortable bar with dim lighting and booths to sink into.
This place isn’t a gimmick, however. The cocktails here are world-class. Try a sweet and citrusy Bicycle Punch, a tropics-inspired Hotel Nacional Especial, or a really excellent Old Fashioned. There’s even a smoking ice cream dessert called Spirits and Cream that’s has the same amount of alcohol as a regular cocktail.
If you’re hungry, the bar also offers truly tasty mains like gourmet burgers and bacon bolognese. Whether you opt for a fancy cocktail or tuck into a great meal, you’re sure to love a covert visit to this awesome hidden speakeasy.
