Fried squid is a popular dish in Mediterranean countries, from Lebanon to Italy. But, if you’ve spent even a few days in Boston, you know there’s no need to travel that far to get excellent calamari. Simply head to Giacomo’s Ristorante in Boston’s North End.
You usually spot the line for Giacomo’s well before noticing the restaurant’s awning.
This spot is both insanely popular and tiny. But when the food’s outstanding, people are willing to wait.
Once you step inside the restaurant, the tin ceilings and tight quarters create a charming, cozy atmosphere.
The menu board is almost as long as the entire restaurant!
You’re practically in the open kitchen, and it’s quite thrilling to watch the chefs at work.
Fried calamari is the very first item on the menu at Giacomo Ristaurante – and for good reason.
Those who aren’t fans of calamari often complain that it's tough – a sign it’s been overcooked. That’s definitely not the case here.
The batter on Giacomo’s fried calamari is perfectly crispy, while the squid remains tender inside. It practically dissolves in your mouth.
Available in both full and half sizes, this appetizer is paired with marinara sauce and fried pepper slices. All the seafood here, including the squid, is extremely fresh.
Follow up your starter with an entrée of lobster and shrimp fusilli…
…Or splurge on the house dinner for two.
A veritable seafood feast, this dish features calamari, scallops, shrimp, lobster, clams, and mussels, all served over linguine. If you go this route, bring a big appetite. Although the restaurant is teeny, the portions are generous.
Next time a craving for fried calamari strikes, you know where to go! Have you visited Giacomo’s yet?
There are now three locations, but we have a soft spot for the one in the North End.
