Anyone who lives in Maryland will tell you that our state is home to some of the best hidden gem restaurants you’ll ever hope to find. Some of them are hidden in plain sight, but others are hiding in more far-flung places, sequestered not by the inconspicuous signage but rather by geography. Skipper’s Pier is one proud member of this isolated category. You’ll have to find your way to Deale -- a charming small town in Southern Maryland -- if you want to uncover Skipper’s and try their incredible food for yourself. But as any Marylander will also tell you, the best seafood restaurants in Maryland are sure to be worth the effort it takes to find them.
You’ll have to head out right to the end of the peninsula to find this place, but once you make the trip you’ll realize it’s a real hidden gem! The smell of the bay washes in and prepares you for all the delectable seafood you’ll find on the menu.
You can sit inside if you prefer, but the patio seating on the dock is the best way to experience all that Skipper’s has to offer.
The crab dip here is one of the best you’ll find around the Old Line State. Packed with cheese and succulent crab meat, it’s a favorite dish of mine and always a hit with my family.
The tried and true Maryland way to experience a dockside seafood restaurant is by ordering a bushel of crabs. Skipper’s does these better than anyone, spicing the crabs to perfection and serving them up ready to go!
Of course, if seafood isn’t your thing, Skipper’s has something for you as well. They know their way around a cut of brisket here as well, so don’t be shy about ordering one instead of the fish.
While you may be tempted after a meal like this, definitely don’t skip the dessert. This pecan cake shot up my list of post-meal sweet treats instantly. It’s fluffy, warm, and dripping with that wonderful pecan syrup just like grandma used to make.
You can’t get a much better view for a meal than this - looking out on the Chesapeake Bay, a bushel of crab shell crackled over the newspaper on the table, you’re sure to feel right at home at Skipper’s.
Be sure to follow Skipper’s Pier on Facebook to get any and all updates about events being held at the restaurant, or to make reservations if you’re planning your adventure down to the bay.
