Maryland has dozens of wineries worth visiting. In fact, you can find a handful of them in a previous article by clicking here. Today we're featuring one of the local favorites, that just so happens to be the state's oldest winery as well. In some ways, this place paved the way for wine in Maryland. Read on to learn more!
Boordy's was Maryland's first commercial winery, originally founded in 1945 by Philip and Jocelyn Wagner in Baltimore. Wine making was different back then, with most things made by hand, including labels.
The brand was bought in 1980 by the R. B. Deford family, who had been been grape growers since 1965. They moved the operation to the current location, in Hydes, Maryland.
The new 240-acre farm allowed the Boordy brand to expand, experiment with flavors, and produce more wine than ever before.
The location is quite charming, still retaining old 19th century buildings.
Although Boordy's still pays tribute to the past, modern amenities and updates have helped them stay on top of the wine industry.
Today, they're one of the most recognizable Maryland wines, with various series and dozens of flavors. Whether you crave red or white, dry or sweet, you'll find something you love.
Head to this historic winery for a day of tasting. Once you find your favorite, purchase a bottle and enjoy.
You can also partake in vineyard tours to learn about the wine making process. The best part is that you get to sip on wine as you stroll.
