Here in Maine lobster is a key part of life. Whether you're eating it, talking about it or even heading out to haul up those pots, you just can't escape lobster in Vacationland. And we're okay with that! While we're perfectly happy with the brown ones that turn red when you cook 'em, we really loved this recent news story!
There's nothing quite so lovely as the quintessential image of a lobster fishing boat in calm waters.
And Maine produces the most lobster of any state in the US. Last year alone, the state saw almost 120 million pounds of lobster pulled from the sea! And since 2011 the annual amount has been more than 100 million pounds. That's a lot of lobster!
Most of the time we know what it's going to look like when it comes up. But every so often someone gets a surprise!
In September 2019 a rare two-tone lobster was pulled from the waters off Stonington.
On December 8th a fisherman in Ellsworth hauled up not one, not two, but three rare lobster! Pictured here are the blue, calico and orange lobsters that somehow ended up on the same day.
The University of Maine Lobster Institute estimates that catching a blue lobster is 1 in 200 million.
And the likelihood of a lobster being orange is about 1 in 30 million. Now imagine what the stats would be on getting three!
Will it ever happen again? Hard to say. But if it can happen once, there's no telling what other wacky things could happen in Maine waters!
Reports say that the lobsters may be donated to a local aquarium so others can appreciate them.
This isn't the first time lobster has been in the news here. A rare lobster that's one in a million was pulled out of the sea and it's fascinating.
