Most people think about lobster and other seafood when they consider food options in Maine, but we believe things go a lot deeper than that. Consider the farm-to-table goodness. Or the incredible ice cream options! There's a lot to love about food in Maine, but today we're focused on donuts. And there's one shop in particular that's doing things exactly right. In fact, we like to believe this spot is a great replacement for your vegetables.
Holy Donut, as the name implies, is as close to heaven as you can be without leaving Maine. With three locations, one in Scarborough, one in Portland and one in Auburn, there are plenty of ways to fill up.
If you're already familiar with Maine's potato donuts, you might remember that they had a location on Exchange Street in the Old Port. While they've since shuttered that spot to focus on the other two, scenes like this are etched into our memories. Lines down the block and selling out by noon were common occurrences.
But how did Maine potatoes become an ingredient in donuts? It all started when founder, Leigh Kellis, craved something sweet but without tons of unhealthy ingredients. After some experimentation mashed potatoes became the star ingredient back in 2011.
Adding this (not-so-secret) ingredient led to a moist product, one that almost melts in your mouth. This is one of the best donuts we've ever had and the flavors are so unique, you'll be coming by to try them all.
The potatoes are sourced from Aroostook County and whenever possible the glazes and other flavor combos are found locally as well. A huge favorite among Mainers is the triple berry glaze and pomegranate.
But be sure to arrive early because if they haven't shut completely after selling out for the day, some of the most popular flavors are gone in an hour or so.
We love the maple bacon flavor with real bacon pieces. And we also appreciate that they create vegan and lots of gluten-free varieties.
Their coffee is fantastic and those who love a good iced version will appreciate that the ice cubes are made out of coffee to prevent dilution.
Whether you visit the locations in Auburn or Portland or choose to larger Scarborough spot, you'll be coming back more than once a week to load up.
Here's a tip! If you buy a dozen to bring to friends you're bound to be offered one. A great way to get good friend points and enjoy a treat.
The Holy Donut has two Maine locations all with different hours. Scarborough and Park Avenue are open daily from 6:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. But, keep in mind that they close when they sell out which is often before their official closing time. You can learn more about all of the locations and see their hours on their website. Or, check them out on Facebook.
Can't get enough Maine donuts! Then we've got just the way to spend the day. Take the Maine donut trail for a delightfully delicious day trip.
