When it comes to the wacky and offbeat, Maine certainly excels. Between our strange museums and whimsical tea rooms, there's something for everyone no matter how obscure. But, if you're looking for a one-stop shop of hippie towns, we recommend you check out the most hippie town in Maine. It's not just our opinion! Thrillist agrees! Read on to find out what it is!
Unity, Maine is a small town of about 2,000 residents located in Waldo County.
The town was originally settled by Quakers, and it went by the name "Twenty-Five Mile Pond Plantation."
Today, it might be best known as the home of the decidedly hippie Unity College.
As well as the Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association.
AND, the beloved annual Common Ground Country Fair.
But what makes it the most hippie town in Maine?
First, there are tons of opportunities to return to nature by exploring Unity Pond, as well as neighboring Sennebec Lake and the many other rivers and lakes.
And, there's a good chance you'll run into locals looking to conserve and preserve the natural landscape in Unity.
MOFGA hosts events such as the Maine Axe and Saw Day, which allows attendees to learn the history of and gain practical experience using all sorts of tools.
And, while the Common Ground Fair happens in the summer, with all the planning it feels like it exists throughout the year!
The local community center is a hub for events and gatherings, helping to make this town feel more like a community than just a place to live.
Of course, the presence of any college will make a town feel more open, but Unity College brings a real "hippy" feel to the area with their many outdoor events and local music gatherings.
You'll see in the faces of those that live here.
And, if things ever start to feel a little too stodgy, head outdoors and visit Unity Pond for a return to those hippie vibes!
