It's easy to call any lobster shack in Maine "iconic." That's because eating any lobster here is one of the most classic pastimes. But, sometimes we just can't help but find a lobster meal particularly special. Despite being located in one of the most touristed areas of the state, this restaurant has reached classic status. And, this year they celebrate 50 incredible years in business.
This season marks 50 years of business for The Lobster Shack at Two Lights in Cape Elizabeth.
It was founded in 1969 by Ruth G. Leadbetter and her husband, James W. Today, the restaurant is owned by their grandson and his wife Jeff and Katie Porch, the third generation to run things here!
There has been a lobster business here since the 1920s when the Leadbetters purchased the business from two women who sold lobster meat here.
Today you'll find the same level of freshness that became a hallmark of The Lobster Shack so many years ago. That's because everything is Maine caught right here.
The inside features seating for 50 with the kind of decor you'd expect at one of the best lobster spots in Maine.
The picnic tables outside overlook the water and can seat hundreds on any given day. Which is a good thing considering they can serve upwards of 1,500 on a busy summer day!
The food here is simple, but easily stands apart from other more casual spots in Maine.
While food is served on the classic red trays ubiquitous to seafood shacks, what's on top of them is special. The rolls are just right and made in the classic Maine style. And you can't miss the blueberry pie!
There's also a great selection of fried fish, including clams and haddock.
The portions are just right, easily satisfying hungry tourists who have spent all morning exploring the lights on the property.
And you just can't beat that view!
Fill up on lobster and then stop into The Candle Shack gift shop before leaving.
This is where the Leadbetters sold the pottery they learned to make during the off-season. Today it's where you'll find plenty of things to take back home to prove you've been to one of the best lobster shacks in Vacationland!
