As Thanksgiving approaches we've got just two things on our mind. Turkey and pies. While some believe that turkey is the star of the show for this event, we'd like to argue on behalf of pies. Pies mean that the hard work of cooking the meal is done. They mean dinner is over and that it's time to wear pants with an elastic waist. Pies also mean sugar and butter and you can't go wrong with a combination like that. In fact, we're in favor of calling the entire holiday Piegiving. As you search for the perfect pies, you'll want to consider this little bakery in Newry. You can order pies for the holiday and, in the summer, their farm stand has a pretty unique way of operating!
Puzzle Mountain Bakery in Newry offers up the freshest baked goods in the area, but that's just one reason why we love them.
You see, this isn't the type of bakery with four walls and a friendly counter person.
Here you'll find yourself face-to-face with fresh pies, cookies and whoopies, but you'll also need to make sure your math skills are well-honed.
Because these fresh goodies can only be purchased with cash on the honor system.
Choose your treats, calculate what you owe and then slip it into the little lock box to the side of the stand.
The pies are made in another(slightly larger!) location and brought fresh each day.
And while this is certainly a small and local operation, they take their baking seriously.
Founder Mary Jo Kelly, who co-owns the business with her son and his wife, might be the best baker in Maine. But she also offers jams.
And don't forget the maple cream cookies.
The whoopie pies here are also an experience.
You'll want to load up and then head to a place to eat your goodies. Many people visit right after hiking Step Falls, which might make you hungry enough to eat dig into a pie right in your car.
Wherever you delight in eating your goodies, be sure to sign the guest book and, of course, have exact change.
Puzzle Mountain Bakery is located at 824 Bear River Rd, Newry, Maine. Check them out on Facebook to see more photos and to keep track of when they're open. You can order pies directly through email.
