There are a good number of old and historic Victorian houses in Maine that we love keeping around in this state and a lovely example is the huge purple Victorian mansion in Sherman that once belonged to the town’s cartwright and first postmaster, A.B. Leavitt. Now, it has been transformed into a beautiful cafe that is serving locally sourced, seasonal foods. Welcome to Salted Butter Farm in Sherman, Maine.
One might think this would be a historical museum at first glance. However, this beautiful purple Victorian mansion that was built in 1893 is now an adorable cafe that serves the freshest food in town.
Inside, you’ll find a whimsical array of decorations like vintage china, a Harry Potter cupboard with flickering lanterns, and so much more. There’s even a purple disco ball in the turret tower.
Salted Butter Farm has multiple dining rooms, each with its own decor and style.
This place only opened about a month ago and the married chefs and owners Jon Purdy and Jenny MacArthur were very pleasantly surprised that they sold out of everything on the opening day.
Love is poured into the cooking here. As Jenny says, “Once I cook for you, you are my family. Love is the number one ingredient and I cook with my heart.”
You’ll agree when you have breakfast here. This Maine Bacon Benny with local shoulder slab bacon, folded farm-fresh egg, grilled English muffin with hollandaise, and potatoes will feel like a hug.
How about some biscuits and gravy made from scratch? By the way, you can order just about any dish to be vegan, vegetarian, or gluten-free and the restaurant will do its best to accommodate.
You can even get a mouthwatering pizza here with just about any combination of toppings you can imagine.
There are grab-and-go fridges and freezers full of freshly made products of all kinds. Dips, scones, soups, meals, and much more. You can get locally crafted sodas as well.
The desserts on the menu often change much like the rest of the menu and you’ll always be in for a wonderful surprise. Do yourself a favor and come experience this place. It’s a labor of love you’ll truly savor.
