Maybe it's because our residents are so sweet. Or maybe it's because we've got a wicked sweet tooth. Whatever the reason, Maine's got plenty of options for some of the best baked goods in the country. While we would be happy to visit any of them on any given day, this little spot in Wells has our hearts. Calling itself a family restaurant, it serves up the best donuts in the world! Congdon's, located in Wells, has been around for as long as anyone can remember, and you definitely need to visit.
The original Congdon's Restaurant was built in Kennebunk in 1945 by Clint and Dot (aka, "Nana") Congdon.
While the food was good, receiving rave reviews from customers, it was clear that the reason people came back time after time was the homemade doughnuts.
When they sold the business later, all of the doughnut equipment was moved into a barn where their dougnut operation became a wholesale business.
But, in 1955, Nana and her son-in-law Herb Brooks, rebuilt Congdon’s where you'll find it today. While the business expanded to include things like fried seafood on the takeout menu, doughnuts still took center stage.
The latest addition came in 1984 when the Pancake Room Restaurant was added to the building.
Today, Congdon's is known for being a thriving community business where locals know they can find a great breakfast with a sweet addition. In fact, they truly offer some of the best donuts in Maine.
Despite receiving accolades from national magazine such as Food & Wine, Congdon's remains humble and committed to community.
And the doughnuts? They're the best!
The doughnuts at Congdon's are perfectly made with a variety of flavors ranging from the traditional to the more unique.
You'll find timeless classics like the jelly and creme.
Or, the tried and true jelly doughnut!
Those in need of some color in their life need to get the confetti.
If you're craving a little extra sweetness, get the Bavarian Crème.
You can stay true to your Maine roots with the blueberry cake donut.
And there's nothing better than a maple square. Or three.
Once you've worked your way through each and every doughnut flavor, try a whoopie pie on for size. They've got them in sizes to feed every appetite.
The menu also includes heartier breakfasts including the honey bun French toast.
And savory breakfast lovers will be happy to know that they've got more than just doughnuts. Try this a breakfast sandwich with a fresh, homemade biscuit.
Because Congdon's is so committed to community, local business and fun, each summer you'll find Maine's only daily food truck event, Congdon's After Dark, in full swing from 4 p.m. until late.
In addition to serving some of the best doughnuts in Maine, Congdon's is a piece of Maine history that must be experienced.
Without a doubt, this is one of the best donut shops near me. And I highly recommend you visit so you'll agree.
