We write a lot about eating in Maine, but anyone who's been here knows why. With new restaurants cropping up throughout the state and some of the longest standing traditions in food showing no signs of slowing, there's quite a bit to cover! As we get closer to warmer weather, we're focused on finding the best ways to mix Maine outdoors with one of the most fun activities you can do here — eat! Today we're talking about a floating restaurant in Maine that's been a state tradition for as long as we can remember. No, it's not one of the new fancy places you'll find in other places in the state, but it's a restaurant that's become synonymous with waterfront views and good times!
DiMillo's on the Water has been a Portland, Maine tradition since 1965, moving to its current location on the water in 1982.
Today, DiMillo's is one of the most beloved and longest-standing restaurants in town.
And it remains a family-run business with Tony's wife, sisters, and sons making sure that everything is managed to the standards set forth by Tony all those years ago.
Inside, the restaurant feels stately and cozy — with nautical decor throughout.
The center features a huge bar, with locals and visitors alike sharing in conversation and appetizers!
The views start almost immediately, with large windows looking out over DiMillo's Marina.
While DiMillo's is open year-round, the warm weather allows for outdoor dining and even more wonderful waterfront views.
We can't forget the food!
Of his first Portland restaurant "Anthony's" opened in 1954, Tony famously said, "The clams you eat here today slept last night in Casco Bay."
That freshness exists at DiMillo's on the Water, too!
From seafood to non-seafood, the food is deliciously prepared and always feels special.
The actual boat has a long and wonderful history!
