By now, most people know that Portland, Maine has some of the best food and beverage in the country. From seafood to Vietnamese food to everything in between, if you're hungry you better hope you're in Portland! But, there's one place that has a little something secret to it. You might know it as one of the most popular places for food and drinks in the Old Port, but did you know they actually have a second bar and eating area?
You can't miss Blythe & Burrows when walking through Portland's Old Port neighborhood. The dimly light interior can be seen from the street and on particularly cold days, the windows might be just a bit foggy.
The restaurant and bar is named after two naval captains killed when the HMS Boxer was captured off the coast of Maine during the War of 1812. They're both buried in the city's famed Eastern Cemetery.
The decor is nautical, which is perfect in a place like Portland. But, that's not all we love about it.
The food is unique and delicious, including things like a cola pork rillette crostini special, with their house kombucha mustard.
And, in the winter they've got one of the best oyster specials in the city — just $1 an oyster on Wednesdays from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
And, the bounty of the bar goes without saying. Their cocktails are some of the best in the city.
But what we love most about this dimly lit spot is the secret bar and restaurant located within in!

Step from the main floor to the upper level, then go through a secret wall and you'll find yourself in their third bar area at the back of the restaurant.
The ambiance here is similar, but it's often less busy.
The speakeasy feel is unmistakable, but the fact that it's in Maine means you're not dealing with anything pretension.
Grab a classic cocktail and settle in for a lovely evening out!
