When people think of Maine food they often imagine lobster with lots of melted butter and maybe a roll on the side. There are quite a few other things we're great at, too. Every tried brown bread baked in a can? Or how about a whoopie pie? These are all quintessentially Maine foods that we love. But bagels? Those are usually left to the experts in places like New York. Until now, that is! Food & Wine Magazine recently named their winners for best bagels in American and three local Maine spots made the list!
1. Scratch Baking Co, South Portland
The Willard Square area of South Portland is one of our favorite little corners of southern Maine. With Willard Beach just down the street and tons of adorable little homes, if there was ever a little slice of New England it's here! Plus, having access to one of the best bagel shops around is a nice bonus.
We're not the only people who think so. As one of the Maine bakeries deemed to have the best bagels in America Scratch Baking Co. is a must-visit if you love starting the day with a great breakfast.
They've got a few different varieties, but we especially love the ones that feature Maine ingredients.
And before you go, make sure to grab something sweet! This bakery is nothing short of spectacular.
2. Forage Market, Lewiston
Walking into Forage is like walking into a hip college coffee shop. The cozy atmosphere is perfect on a chilly Maine day, of which there are many in just about any season!
While we love the coffee and their baked goods, Forage may have set the standard for bagels in Maine. With so much success they opened a second location on Washington Avenue in Portland, we're not surprised they made the Food & Wine list.
This wood-fired bagel is one of the best in the country and it's perfect with everyone from a simple shmear to an entire breakfast sandwich.
3. Rover Bagel, Biddeford
Freshly baked in their ultra-cool Pepperell Mill space, Rover Bagels is a good and simple spot for seriously delicious bagels.
Wood-fired to perfection this bagel won't be a lot like others you've tried. It takes its cues from Anadama bread, a New England tradition. But that doesn't make it any less scrumptious.
Because the flavor is so unique, these bagels are great on their own. But try them as part of a sandwich and your day will be made.

We love them packed with bacon.
But the lox and cream cheese version has us wondering if our days of heading to NYC for bagels is over for good.
