The culinary scene in Maine is finally being talked about across the country. We were one of the first states to truly embrace the concept of "farm to table" and chefs from all over have come here to live out their restaurateur dreams. While all of this is fantastic (I do love a nice night out!) it's our mom and pop restaurants that make us truly Maine.

These are the places that have been in families for generations and many know their clientele by name. They're the places that consistently serve up the perfect meal - the meal that reminds you of childhood. Here are some of our favorite of these down-home, local restaurants. They may not get a write-up in the Boston Globe, but to us they're front page news.

1. Sylvia's Cafe, Ellsworth

If it's a classic, community feel diner you're looking for, Sylvia's will deliver! They're known for great prices, being super accommodating and offering menu options that appeal to a wide range of dietary needs. Get the homemade baked goods!

2. Flatlanda's Diner, Fairfield

The Flatlanda' is about as friendly as it gets. On any given day, you might find the owner waiting tables and getting to know the customers. The unique and creative specials are posted daily and the sign outside will have you laughing so hard, you'll HAVE to pull over.

3. Little Red Hen Diner & Bakery, Andover

The folks manning the operation at Little Red Hen are, quite possibly, the nicest people you'll ever meet! And, just as notable is the food! Everything - seriously, EVERYTHING - is homemade. From the english muffins that come with your breakfast to the ketchup - the care that has gone into the creation of this food and lovely.

4. Looney Moose Cafe, Stratton

The wonderful staff here will cook you up a delicious plate of pancakes, but make sure to save room for the strawberry shortcake. You might drive right past if you're not careful, but despite its small stature it's worth a visit. A true family establishment. And, if you love moose, you'll love the decor here - from string lights to art on the walls!

5. Thompson’s Restaurant, Bingham

Thompson's gets consistently great reviews for both food and service. It's been in the family for ages and local kids have grown up waiting tables here. It's a great place to stop off if you find yourself up North and have a hankering for donut holes. They're complimentary!

6. Eagle's Nest Restaurant, Brewer

This place is local Maine through and through. Their lobster rolls get rave reviews and the small space will make you feel like a local, even if you're not from the Bangor area. Get the seafood platter if you've got a small army to feed. And, the Penobscot River location is great for views.

7. Nook & Cranny, Baileyville

Washington County's "Best Kept Secret" serves up seriously good cuisine with great local flair - all in a converted chicken coop! A family business through and through, you'll feel right at home the second you step inside. Try the Atlantic salmon topped Raye's mustard and southern bourbon finished in the broiler.

8. Ameera Bread, Portland

This hole-in-the-wall spot on Forest Avenue used to be known as "Tandoor." While they've changed their name, they haven't changed the fact that the bread is the best you'll find in Maine. Owned by an Iraqi immigrant family, they've been churning out traditional foods to Portland residents for years. Sources say they have the best falafel in town!

9. Bayview Takeout, Beals

One of our favorite lobster rolls in Maine, we couldn't leave Bayview off this list! But, what's great, is that their impressive offering doesn't end with lunch food. Try their homemade deserts (like this s'more sundae!) and you won't regret it. Order at the window and take your plate to the tables to look out over the bay and the Jonesport fishing village.

10. Grammy's Country Inn, Linneus

Grammy's Country Inn is home to huge portions, great prices and friendly people. They don't call it comfort food for nothing. Order up a double cheeseburger and finish with their famous GIGANTIC whoopie pie. They're known to be over one pound of Maine goodness.

11. Schulte & Herr, Portland

Home cooked German food at its finest. The potato pancakes get rave reviews and it's slightly off the beaten path location make it easy to avoid the Old Port crowds. It's BYOB, so come prepared!
