When it comes to food, most people assume we only do one thing here in Maine: Lobster. While it's true that we serve up a mean lobster, there are plenty of other foods to rave about here in Vacationland. In fact, many of our restaurants have achieved national (and even global!) acclaim. Unsurprisingly, these places are often busy and can be hard to get into when they're packed with visitors clamoring to get a taste of what Maine food is all about. While we typically avoid the places we think might be a little too busy and over-hyped, there are some that are absolutely worth the trouble! Today, we've listed a few famous restaurants that we think are popular for a reason!
1. Francine Bistro, Camden
This little restaurant is tucked away and can be found at night by following the twinkle of the outdoor patio lights. Enjoy a cocktail, glass of wine and any of the constantly changing, fresh dishes. The Pemaquid Oysters and Steak Frites are constantly mentioned to be outstanding. Visit them at: 55 Chestnut Street / 207- 230-0083
2. The Lost Kitchen, Freedom
This spot was recently reported to have sold out of all their reservations for the upcoming season in 15 minutes! This remote spot is one of Maine's most wonderful hidden (but very famous!) gems. And we mean that in a very literal sense. It's tucked away in tiny Freedom, Maine. Try your luck at a reservation by calling them on: 207-382-3333
3. Central Provisions, Portland
Central Provisions has been humming in the Old Port since 2014. The historic building that is home to the restaurant provides the perfect, cozy feel to this small plates and cocktail-focused establishment. If you can't get a table, try showing up for a bar seat. Then, make sure to order enough to share including the spicy beef salad and lobster toast. The suckling pig gets rave reviews as well. Visit them at: 414 Fore Street, Portland / 207-805-1085
4. A1 Diner, Gardiner
A good way to make yourself one of the most famous restaurants in Maine? Be featured on Diners, Dives and Drive-ins! Rather than lose steam after this TV appearance, the A1 only got better. You'll find typical diner fare here, along with some extra-special extras like whoopie pies and summer berry buckle. Visit them at: 3 Bridge Street, Gardiner / 207-582-4804.
5. Eventide Oyster Co., Portland
This just might be the most hip restaurant in Portland, if not Maine. Lately, "famous" feels like an understatement. Mentioned in travel magazines far and wide and often named to "best of" lists, we recommend a visit to Eventide during the off season when you have a better chance of getting a table. The hip concrete bar features a shellfish display made of a slab of Maine granite. The oysters are categorized into "Maine" and "From Away" and change continually. Visit them at: 86 Middle Street, Portland / 207-774-8538
6. Red's Eats, Wiscasset
While the hype always has us nervous for the output, Red's won't disappoint. There's oftentimes a long wait for a good reason. The lobster rolls here aren't covered in mayo and pieces are large enough to dip directly into the melted butter provided on the side. Visit them at 41 Water Street in Wiscasset / 207-882-6128.
7. DiMillo's On The Water, Portland
While this one might not be a new and trendy, it's a Portland institution! It's been around since 1982, when it was created on a 200 foot former car ferry. They serve some wonderful seafood, along with Italian food. Plus you've got some really lovely views of the harbor if you snag a window seat. Visit them at: 154 Commercial Street / 207-772-2216
8. The Well {at Jordan's Farm}
This seasonal spot has people coming back for the amazingly fresh food (much of it sourced right from Jordan's Farm), beautiful pastoral setting and unique outdoor seating... perfect on a warm summer evening. The most unique part just might be the setting. You can choose to sit in small gazebo-type areas or right out in the open next to the flower garden. Visit them at: 21 Wells Road, Cape Elizabeth / 207-831-9350.
9. Moody's Diner, Waldoboro
Moody's Diner has been a Waldoboro institution since 1927. And, while the history is fun it's the food we've come to know and love! From blueberry pancakes to lunches like the grilled chicken deluxe with sweet potato fries and coleslaw, this place is worth that line you see outside. There's even a gift shop to keep you busy! Visit them at: 1885 Atlantic Highway in Waldoboro / 207-832-7785
10. Earth at Hidden Pond, Kennebunkport
Located within luxury boutique hotel, Hidden Pond, Earth is a delightful place to spend a meal. Their slow food and farm-to-table feel will delight foodies. Everything is created with great care and, while some say they're on the small side, the portions will certainly satisfy. Visit them at: 354 Goose Rocks Road, Kennebunkport / 207-967-9050.
11. Palace Diner, Biddeford
Originally opened back when Biddeford was a textile mill town, the Palace Diner has been around since 1927. Known for their simple menu items that come perfectly prepared, you won't find typical diner fare at The Palace. While the names may sound familiar, each ingredient is made fresh and local (whenever it makes sense) and the taste is nothing short of perfection. Visit them at: 18 Franklin Street, Biddeford / 207-284-0015.
