We love waterfront restaurants, and luckily, there are plenty around the Greater New Orleans Area. One of our favorites is Middendorf’s, and we hope it will become your favorite too! This historic eatery has been around since 1934, surviving countless hurricanes, ownership changes, and renovations throughout the years. While the exterior may not look the same, there’s one dish on the menu that’s been around since it opened, and it’s one of the reasons this historic restaurant has a continued fan base after nearly a century of being open.
There are two Middendorf restaurants.
The original seafood joint is the location most locals are familiar with, as it can be seen from the interstate driving towards Manchac. In 2019, they expanded to open a second location in Slidell.
The dining room feels like you’re right at home.
It’s a very Louisianian space filled with beautiful natural wood and swampy murals with tons of natural light and lovely views.
If the weather is cooperating, take advantage of their outdoor seating.
Vibrant colors and eclectic designs add a touch of whimsy to an otherwise nostalgic atmosphere.
The views are simply mesmerizing.
The only thing better than the view is the food.
Seafood is their specialty, so be sure to come hungry!
From towers of seafood platters to whole-fried fish, Middendorf's menu is full of tasty options from the sea.
Of course, you'll also find burgers and steaks, too. Something for everyone!
But the fan favorite is their specialty dish: thin-fried catfish.
Just when you thought fried catfish couldn't get any better, it does.
The recipe dates back to the original owners, Louis and Josie Middendorf.
When the restaurant first opened, Louis tended to the bar and Josie did all of the cooking, using her own personal recipes (many of them are still on the menu today). It was Josie that came up with this legendary recipe and clearly it was a hit because customers keep coming back to sink their teeth into it!
