Ah the perennial question—where’s the best place to get a po-boy in New Orleans? Perhaps the most classic dish in the entire city, with all of the newest places opening up in the past few years, everyone’s got an opinion. 1. Johnny’s Po-Boys, 511 St. Louis Street
Founded in 1950 and known as the oldest family owned po-boy shop in New Orleans, Johnny's offers a classic take on the iconic sandwiches--and yes, dressed means with pickles here!
2. Mahony’s, 3454 Magazine St.
A more modern take on the classic po-boy restaurant, Mahony's offers unique pairings like the short rib po-boy with onion rings and the Shrimp Remi po-boy with fried green tomatoes and grilled shrimp, pictured here.
3. Parkway Tavern, 538 Hagan Ave.
Parkway Tavern, found in the heart of Bayou St. John, rose to prominence on the back of their famed roast beef po-boy, but has come to be a favorite for all it has to offer. The sweet potato fries are a real treat---but expect to wait in line at peak hours.
4. Crabby Jack’s, 428 Jefferson Hwy
An offshoot from the popular Jacque-Imo's cafe, this Jefferson Hwy restaurant provides amazing fried seafood sandwiches with fresh and high quality ingredients. The calamari and Fleur de bree sandwiches really stand out.
5. Avery’s, 2510 Tulane Ave.
A newer shop on the scene, Avery's family owned and operated restaurant offers carefully created sandwiches with modern twists--including the ever-popular Buffalo Shrimp po-boy, pictured here.
6. Frady’s One Stop Food Store, 3231 Dauphine Street
When you have a craving for delicious corner store po-boys, Frady's is the place to visit. A whole range of options awaits, with plenty of juicy gravy.
7. Killer Poboys, 219 Dauphine St.
Beginning as a pop-up, Killer Po-boys quickly became known as the most creative and dynamic of po-boy shops on the scene. With sandwiches like roasted sweet potato and smoked salmon po-boys, as well as the lamb sausage pictured here, this is the place to come when you're ready for something different.
8. Verti Marte, 1201 Royal St.
A classic shop in the French Quarter, Verti Marte offers a huge array of delicious options 24 hours a day. The All That Jazz shrimp and oyster po-boy is particularly popular.
9. Gene’s, 1040 Elysian Fields Ave.
This bright pink building at the intersection of Elysian Fields and St. Claude Ave. offers classic sandwiches. The stand out here is the hot sausage and cheese po-boy, which really breaks new ground in the realm of sausage po-boys.
10. Domilise’s, 5240 Annunciation St.
A truly unique New Orleans dining experience, po-boy seekers here should come ready to wait, since all good things take time. Their take on the classic po-boys includes a juicier version, where hot sauce and ketchup come as part of the standard dressed order.
11. Melba's, 1525 Elysian Fields Ave.
This corner store offers over stuffed po-boys at great prices and plenty of side order options. Simply delicious.
