There are many sights in nature that are universally beloved - snow-capped mountains, a wide-open expanse of greenery, and crystal-clear water to name just a few. Perhaps the most beautiful of all sights, however, is the sun painting the sky all sorts of brilliant colors as its sets below the horizon. In Kentucky, especially along the Ohio River, there are many places to experience a sunset but quite possibly the best place is River House Restaurant and Raw Bar in Louisville.
River House Restaurant and Raw Bar, which opened in August 2015 and is located ten minutes east of Louisville’s downtown, is part of a 27,000-square-foot development on the Ohio River which also includes Levee Bourbon Lounge.
The restaurant, whose back looks out toward Jeffersonville, Indiana, on the Ohio River's other bank, is Louisville-based chef John Varanese’s second restaurant following the opening of the aptly named Varanese Restaurant in 2007. Both the inside and outside boast ultra-modern characteristics.
Perhaps the most pertinent feature of River House is its patio, which faces the Ohio River out in the back. This massive space is the perfect spot from which to watch a river sunset and includes several tables shaded by umbrellas and Adirondack chairs for lounging in.
There are several other areas in the restaurant that cater to larger parties and are perfect to watch the sunset over the Ohio.
River House’s private wine room seats 12 people and includes a beautiful wooden table and chairs, modern lighting fixtures, and - of course - a wine cooler. There is also another larger dining area that seats up to 50 guests and features 40-foot riverfront views. Finally, the restaurant’s Savor at River House - an expansive space that, like the other two rooms, can be rented out for events - offers seating for 300 people and a 1,100-square-foot terrace from which to watch the Sun slip below the horizon.
Popular items at River House include those from the raw bar section of the menu. These include such delicacies as peel-and-eat shrimp, king crab legs, and oysters on the half-shell.
If you’re not that much of a seafood fan, not to worry! River House has you covered.
Check out entrés like New York skirt steak and pulled chicken with cavatappi pasta and sides like okra ratatouille. Any of these will be sure to impress.
Round out your meal with a selection from River House’s long list of wines, cocktails, and bourbons, or check out some of the restaurant’s desserts which include delectable treats like peach and sweet potato biscuit cobbler and white chocolate bread pudding.
Sunset views with your significant other or your family members, a drink in hand, and good food in your belly - there's almost nothing better in life. And there's arguably no better place in the Bluegrass State to experience this than at Louisville's River House. The establishment accepts reservations through OpenTable and offers carry-out and curbside pick-up. For more information, check out River House's website or the restaurant's Facebook page.
