In the Highlands section of Louisville, you'll find many lovely, restored Victorian homes lining the streets. But what's hiding inside this particular one on Baxter Avenue may surprise you. You may not notice it at first, but the incredible restaurant, Gralehaus, is housed inside this stately home and trust me---you don't want to just walk on by.
Open since 2014, Gralehaus resides in a recently renovated Victorian home that was built in 1905. From the outside, it very much looks as it did over 100 years ago, but the inside is now bustling with the preparation of delicious recipes and drinks.
On the first floor of the home is the cafe and coffee haus. While the interior is small, the atmosphere is unique and makes for a relaxing spot to enjoy a good meal. The decor keeps to the history of the building, but the open kitchen and shiny subway tile keep it modern.
The chefs at Gralehaus quite simply know their stuff. Their menu is fresh and seasonal, so you will see some changes from time to time. They serve breakfast and lunch daily from 8am - 4pm and you can't go wrong with any of the choices on their Kentucky-inspired menu - food or drink.
The Haus Burger is definitely a favorite and from the picture, you can see why. And yes, that's a milkshake to go with your burger. The presentation of each item is also impressive.
Breakfast at Gralehaus is flavorful and mouthwatering and smartly served all day. So you can enjoy an afternoon with a bowl of seasonal hash, along with a Beermosa - a beer cocktail served with orange juice.
One of the most talked about items on the menu is their biscuit. Whether you choose to have one plain alongside an artful cup of coffee, or as a sandwich piled high with country ham, egg and cheese, it will be a meal you won't soon forget.
Since seating inside can be a bit limited (but don't let that deter you!), they do share an incredible patio with neighboring Holy Grale. You can enjoy your meal and drinks in the biergarten when the weather allows.
And if the food weren't enough to make this restaurant unique, Gralehaus is also the area's first and only Bed and Beverage. The second and third floors of the home are three beautifully decorated rooms that you can rent and have a complete "bed & beverage" experience. Imagine waking up to the smell of biscuits baking and heading to bed after a drink on the patio.
Gralehaus surprises again with its own homemade soft serve ice cream. Flavors vary, but it's just another unexpected twist on a classic southern restaurant, housed inside an unassuming Kentucky home.
Gralehaus isn't flashy, and definitely not your typical restaurant, but that's what makes it so amazing. Have you enjoyed a meal here? Share your experience in the comments! Gralehaus is located at 1001 Baxter Ave. Louisville, Kentucky, 40204. For more info on the restaurant, as well as their "Bed & Beverage," check out their website here.
