Kentucky has a lot of German ancestry, especially along the Ohio River. In fact, by the 1850s, Louisville's population was 35 percent German. Cincinnati's early settlers were also heavily German, meaning the towns across the river in northern Kentucky, such as Newport and Covington, also have German roots. This means that there are some pretty delicious and authentic German restaurants still in Kentucky today. Here are 9 of them.

4. Gasthaus, Louisville
The atmosphere of this family-owned restaurant makes you feel like you've stepped into a quaint little German town, complete with a staff wearing traditional costumes. 5. Wunderbar, Covington

6. Deustsche Ecke Bakery and Cafe, Radcliff
Don't let the name intimidate you. This quaint little cafe serves a hearty lunch buffet. People rave about the jaeger sauce and the desserts. Deustsche Ecke Bakery and Cafe is located at 451 N. Wilson Road, Radcliff, KY 40160.
7. Strasse Haus, Covington
This pub is a great place to go to have a few brews, eat some German pub food, and listen to live music. Strasse Haus is located at 630 Main Street, Covington, KY 41011.
8. Wertheim's Restaurant, Covington
This old mom and pop place has been serving German-American meals since 1989, and has a lovely front porch area to sit. Wertheim's is located at 514 W. 6th Street, Covington, KY 41011.
9. Katharina's Café Konditorei, Newport
Katharina's is temporarily closed because they are moving to a new space that is currently being renovated, but folks are anxiously awaiting their reopening. This is a great place to go for a traditional German breakfast or coffee. Their new location will be at 8th and Washington in Newport.
