Kentucky is known for its role in the creation of bourbon, but many do not realize that our state has actually played a big part in the world of winemaking. Much of the land in Kentucky is ideal for grape growing, and the Bluegrass State is even home to the country's first commercial winery, which is still in business today. Prohibition interrupted this passion, but things picked back up again in the 1970s, and Kentucky is now home to more than 65 wineries.
Some of the best in the state are located in northern Kentucky, and you can check them out through the Northern Kentucky Back Roads Wine Trail. This scenic wine trail takes you down the back roads of the Bluegrass, so you can experience both the breathtaking landscape and the delicious wines of this region of Kentucky.
The Northern Kentucky Back Roads Wine Trail takes you to six local wineries throughout northern counties of the Bluegrass State. On your way to each destination, you'll enjoy lovely scenery including river views and rolling countryside.
You can choose to visit these in any order you like, but don’t miss Baker-Bird Winery in historic Augusta. Baker-Bird was actually the first commercial winery in the country! You can learn more about this destination here.
Another beautiful stop along the trail is StoneBrook Winery. You'll also get to experience some history here, as well as award-winning wines. If you time your visit just right, you can even enjoy one of their delicious barbecue dinners. For more on these tasty events, click here.
Each of the six destinations is picturesque, and Seven Wells Vineyard & Winery is no exception. Located in California, Kentucky, stop by to sip on a glass of wine while looking out over the rows of grapes.
Camp Springs Vineyard is another relaxing spot that also offers events that include meals. Comfort Food Fridays are an especially tasty time to stop by.
Atwood Hill Winery in Morning View is perhaps the most scenic of the vineyards, although it's a close call. Check out the sunset views and enjoy a tasting in either their cozy tasting room or out on the deck.
