A homemade Kentucky breakfast is a great way to start your day. We are blessed with some of the greatest southern cooking restaurants imaginable, each serving up homemade breakfast like Momma use to make; with love. Some of these fine establishments serve breakfast during all business hours. Others you have to go to before 10:30 a.m., but it is well worth it.
Here are 12 amazing Kentucky breakfast spots you will want to try:
12. Wild Eggs
This breakfast specialty nook at 3985 Dutchmans Lane in Louisville may be a chain, but it offers some unique egg combinations and the best Mr. Potato Head Casserole you will ever eat. Though it is a chain, it is a chain worth mentioning. Their Cinnamon Swirl French toast is fantastic too.
11. Josie's
This American variety restaurant at 821 Chevy Chase Place in Lexington has a variety of breakfast foods. You can enjoy pancakes, a nice omlette selection, and an amazing array of breakfast platters with eggs done to your specifications. Their other dishes are equally delicious, but breakfast is always amazing.
10. G's Pancake House Inc.
Pancakes are definitely the specialty at 15108 Fort Campbell Blvd in Oak Grove. You can order them up plain or add chocolate chips, blueberries, fresh strawberries, whipped cream and more. They also have fantastic eggs, sausage, biscuits and plenty of other choices on the menu.
9. Windy Hollow
This great family restaurant at 8260 KY-81 in Owensboro has one of the best country ham breakfasts in the state, because it is a buffet. Everything on this buffet is homemade and delicious.
8. Otto's
The brunch is worth the wait on crowded days at 521 Main Street in Covington. They have amazing Banana Chocolate French Toast, Crab Hash, Lemon Buttermilk Pancakes, a divine breakfast casserole and so much more. There is absolutely nothing in this restaurant that isn’t absolutely delicious.
7. Mammy's Kitchen
If you love country ham and eggs cooked to order, come out to116 W. Stephen Foster Avenue in Bardstown. Everything is made fresh to order and served up hot and delicious. Their Hot Brown is one of the best in the state and perfect for breakfast, lunch or dinner.
6. Gold Rush Cafe
If you have never had Scottish Eggs, 400 Broadway Street in Paducah is the place to try them. They best way to describe them is a simple, wow… Think deep fried boiled egg with a crisp breading. It is really good stuff.
5. Earl G Dumplin's
Everything here is delicious from the steak and cheese biscuit to the fried apples. If you are ever passing through Scottsville, you will want to make a pit stop at 1707 Old Gallatin Road for breakfast.
4. Colonial Cottage
The homemade biscuits and gravy are melt in your mouth good at 3140 Dixie Highway in Erlanger. They serve a special Goetta that comes highly recommended as well, though I’ve never tried it. This is a friendly, down home type restaurant that is well worth a visit. This place has been around since the Great Depression, so you better believe cooking has been perfected. They didn’t have breakfast pictures available, but everything served here is amazing.
3. Bluebird
There is a nice breakfast variety at 202 W. Main Street in Stanford starting with fresh chocolate chip hotcakes, breakfast wraps and homemade cinnamon rolls and muffins. Everything here is absolutely delicious and the service always comes with a smile.
2. Betty's OK Cookin
This buffet style restaurant at 2339 Campbellsville Road in Columbia was one of our Grandfather’s favorite places to go for breakfast or dinner. The food is made fresh daily from local ingredients that are farm fresh. You won’t regret enjoying some fresh eggs, biscuits, gravy, sausage and all the fixins’ at this fine country cooking restaurant.
1. Barbara Lee's
This family owned restaurant at 2410 Brownsboro Road has been a source of fantastic breakfasts for my husband, myself and many of our friends for decades. Lora makes the best eggs you will ever put in your mouth and she makes them too order. Their biscuits and gravy are incredible when it comes to good, old fashioned, country flavor. The Old South Sunday is our favorite breakfast platter, but they have incredible omelets, burgers, covered, chunked and chili’d hash browns and more. Barbara Lee’s is a must visit if in Louisville.
There is just something about a southern breakfast that starts the day out right, and everyone deserves a break from the kitchen. Fresh eggs cooked to order, biscuits, gravy, buttery fried apples, grits and fresh jam can really brighten up the morning. There are plenty of other wonderful breakfast nooks across the state, but these are a few we’ve dined at or know others who have. What is your favorite breakfast spot in Kentucky, other than your own kitchen?
