Wanting to take a vacation but can't find the proper funds to do so? Don't worry; it happens to the best of us... but fortunately, the Sunflower State is chock-full of restaurants that not only transform your taste buds, but your surroundings too. If you are looking to travel to a new location or time period, be sure to visit:
1. T-Rex Cafe (Kansas City)
Dine amongst pre-historic friends at this larger-than-life experience. Just don't stick around too long... I hear the T-Rex gets moody when he's hungry.
2. Brookville Hotel (Abilene)
The man (women and children); the myth; the legendary Brookville Hotel, still serving the best family-style meals in all its 1870s glory.
3. Thirsty's Brew Pub and Grill (Hays)
A family favorite is the department store-sized Thirsty's, which features numerous themes such as the 1950s, movies and even the tropics. (The cuties pictured are my niece, Sara; son, Jackson; and nephew, Ben.)
4. Pirate Pete's Seafood Restaurant (Wichita)
Ahoy thar! I bet ye can't guess th' theme 'o 'tis galley, can ye? Anyone ye can't must swim th' plank!
5. Fritz's Railroad Restaurant (Kansas City)
All aboard the train to Fritz's, with non-stop service all the way to Yums-ville!
6. Renaissance Cafe (Assaria)
Not so much a theme as it is an old-school high school gym with incredible Italian food.
7. Coach's Neighborhood Grill and Bar (Junction City)
Oh, put me in coach; I'm ready to play (and/or eat)!
8. Hollywood Casino at Kansas Speedway (Kansas City)
"Wow! This is so unexpected! I'd like to thank my co-workers for bringing me here... and my parents for teaching me at a young age the importance of a good meal! I would also like to thank the Academy..." Anyway, you get the idea.
9. Hays House Restaurant (Council Grove)
Saddle up for some good ol' fashioned cooking at the historic Hays House, which has boasted the same hospitality and ambiance since 1857.
10. Pullman Place Family Restaurant (Leavenworth)
Don't just take the last train to Clarksville... take it to Leavenworth for some made-from-scratch goodness that you won't find anywhere else.
11. Stearman Field Bar & Grill (Benton)
If trains aren't your thing, be sure to visit Stearman's; an epic bar and grill with killer views of the Stearman Field runway outside and aviation themed decor inside.
12. Hangar One Steakhouse (Wichita)
Can't make it to Benton? Then I'll meet you at Wichita's favorite airplane-themed restaurant!
13. Jazz, A Louisiana Kitchen (Lawrence)
Because who says you have to travel clear down to New Orleans to get some authentic Cajun-Creole fare?
Which themed restaurant is your favorite? Let us know in the comments.
