When it comes to dining in Kansas, there are plenty of delicious options to choose from that are scattered all across the Sunflower State. From family-style chicken joints to themed restaurants, there is no shortage of places to go to enjoy a memorable meal. However, this one Topeka-area cafe may just be the most memorable of them all. The Sommerset Cafe in Kansas is one-of-a-kind. Here's why:
Located in the small town of Dover, the iconic Sommerset Hall Cafe is a historic establishment in Kansas. This cafe has a fascinating story dating back to the 1800s. When the building first opened, it was the Sage General Store. Then, it became the official home for the local Lodge. It was eventually purchased, remodeled, and reopened by Everette and Judy Thomas in 2006 and turned into the delicious cafe we know today.
After the cafe opened for business, it didn't take long for it to gain popularity for both its home-cooked meals and friendly service. One part of the menu, however, makes the Sommerset Cafe a Kansas institution ... can you guess what it is?
If you guessed desserts (namely pie), you'd be correct!
In 2008, the Sommerset Cafe received national attention after pie maker Norma Grubb's scrumptious Coconut Cream Pie was named the "Best Pie in America" by ABC's "Good Morning America." Unfortunately, Norma passed away in 2011, but both her spirit and legendary pie recipe live on at the Sommerset Cafe in Kansas.
