Some history buffs study wartime artifacts, but others like their history served in a glass. This bar in Kansas is the oldest we could find on record, and is a good piece of history to share. This might come as a surprise, but did you know this beloved restaurant is also the oldest bar in Kansas? Let's check it out!
Did you know the Hays House is the oldest bar in Kansas too?
Technically it was called a tavern, but they were selling alcohol before anyone else that we've found. What started in 1857 is still here, with both the restaurant and bar portions intact. No one has stayed overnight here since the 1940s, but they have plenty of space to serve their customers with food, drink, and a good time.
They've recently renovated, and brought a bright new look to the exterior and makes everything look crisp and clean.
Of course, their food is nothing to shake a stick at, either. They serve some of the best chicken around, as well as chicken fried steak.
On Wednesdays, they have fried chicken buffets that bring in the majority of their business.
However, their other fare is homestyle goodness you can always expect here. Also, if you get a chance to try their pie, I would definitely recommend it.
Sometimes they have live music, which just adds to the feeling you're stepping back into a simpler time.
Why not stop by, sit down at a renovated bar that's been here for ages, and have a drink?
They're open starting at 6 a.m. every day except Sunday, but they close anywhere from 3 p.m. to 8 or 9 p.m. depending on the day of the week. Make sure you check they're open, but otherwise have a happy time!
You'll find Hays House at 112 W. Main Street in Council Grove, Kansas. It's in the eastern half, straight south of Manhattan. Feel free to use the map below to help you get there. As always, happy trails!
