The whole trip takes about nine hours, so I suggest taking your next three-day weekend and planning somewhere to stay in between! It's a great way to explore Kansas and how much we love chicken. You may even want to spend a night at a cute airbnb and turn it into a mini vacation! Kansas fried chicken is worth going out of your way for.
1. Barto's Idle Hour - 201 Santa Fe St., Frontenac, Kansas
First stop on our tour (if you're heading east to west) is
Barto's Idle Hour in Frontenac, Kansas. They've got amazing fried chicken as well as sides, which makes it a solid start to this amazing Kansas fried chicken trail.
2. Chicken Annie's - 498 E K47 Hwy., Girard, Kansas
Don't get too full just yet! Next up is a Kansas classic - Chicken Annie's. They've been feuding with other local chicken places since they started, and they've got great assets to work with. First, the chicken is amazing by itself. Then, you can choose from all sorts of sides, including spaghetti. Finally, these onion straws really make dinner here a special event.
3. Chicken Mary's - 1133 E 600th Ave., Pittsburg, Kansas
Chicken Mary's is Chicken Annie's fiercest competitor, and has been for years. Plenty of Kansans (including you readers) argue all the time about who makes the better chicken. Personally, I love both restaurants, but it's hard to choose when both places make such good chicken. Their fluffy mashed potatoes, crispy french fries, and juicy chicken keeps me coming back for more. You'll have to try it yourself!
4. Go Chicken Go - 1000 S Harrison St., Olathe, Kansas
After that is Go Chicken Go, a northeast Kansas and Kansas City chain with a couple locations around the area. They make everything from fried chicken to gizzards and livers, so feel free to try all sorts of chicken parts fried to perfection. This place will really tug on your heartstrings.
5. Olpe Chicken House - 8 KS-99, Olpe, Kansas
Next up is another Kansas classic, Olpe Chicken House. You can't visit this area without stopping by Olpe, and tasting the amazing chicken hiding within. It makes you think back to fried chicken in your childhood, which is what I love the most about this restaurant. Devour the nostalgic flavors of home at this Kansas favorite.
6. Brookville Hotel - 105 E Lafayette Ave., Abilene, Kansas
The Brookville Hotel, also known as Legacy Kansas, is a restaurant that serves good fried chicken, but you're also getting an experience with your meal. This restaurant has history, having served Kansas since 1915, though it has moved from Brookville to Abilene because they needed a new building and more customers to keep the history alive.
7. L&T Family Restaurant - 1016 Main St., Goodland, Kansas
Last but not least (or first, if you live in western Kansas) we have L&T Family Restaurant, where you can enjoy fresh fried chicken and plenty of great sides alongside it. But don't leave without ordering some dessert! After all of this savory fried chicken, you should treat yourself to something sweet.
