If you live in Iowa, you won’t be hard-pressed to find an interesting place to dine. This state is full of unique restaurants and diners, but this one might be the most unusual of all. Located in Dubuque, Paul’s Tavern is strange but delicious eatery packed with taxidermy. Here’s what you need to know about eating here.
Interesting decor may be nothing new in the restaurant world, but Paul’s Tavern takes things to another level. This unassuming eatery has walls that are lined with the stuffed heads and bodies of animals great and small.
When you first walk in, you’ll immediately notice the row of ram and deer heads behind the bar. It might be hard to tear your eyes away from their gorgeous horns long enough to order a drink. Each is labeled and has its own unique stare. Vegans may not want to stop in here.
If you turn around, you’ll be met with an equally incredible sight: a massive glass case full of animals like deer, ducks, goats, crocodiles, and even a huge bear. It’s really something enjoying a burger and soda under the watchful gate of a mammoth bear.
Speaking of burgers, Paul’s Tavern is famous for theirs. The patties here are moist, rich, and flavorful. The beef is sourced locally and each burger is served with pickles, cheese, sliced onions, and a basic bun. There’s no fryer at Paul’s so you’ll have to swap out the typical fries for chips if you want potatoes with your burger.
