At Bauder's in Des Moines, you can turn back the clock and enjoy an old-fashioned meal at a soda fountain. In operation since 1917, this pharmacy, deli, and dessert counter hasn't changed much in over a century. The sandwiches are still low-cost and delicious, the sodas and ice cream are still sweet and creamy, and the service is still fast and accurate. Of course, some things have changed, so step into the oldest deli in Iowa and belly up to the counter.
Bauder's hasn't changed all that much since it opened its doors in 1917. The front still looks like a humble Des Moines pharmacy.
The old-school lunch counter still looks like it stepped out of town, and the menu prices still feel like they stepped out of a time machine!
Even the classic soda machine looks like it could be from the 1950s! Somehow, a Coke just tastes different coming out of one of these.
The menu has all the deli classics, including grilled cheese, deli meats, and burgers. The toasted sandwiches loaded with melting cheese in crisp bread are a local favorite - and most options are under $5!
A soda is a great way to chase your meal, but if you're feeling more indulgent, enjoy one of the thick and creamy shakes.
The ice cream counter is still serving up fresh-scooped frozen desserts, and the hot fudge sundaes definitely don't feel like they came out of a bottle.
Of course, Bauder's has had one big change since it opened - and it starts with the smell of fresh-baked donuts that hits you as soon as you open the door!
The pharmacy and deli now plays host to a branch of the wildly popular Des Moines Donut King franchise - and fans are lining up every morning!
