Not many restaurants can claim to be permanently immortalized in a work of art, but General Store Pub in tiny quarry town Stone City, Iowa can do just that. Famous American painter Grant Wood, known best for his portrait "American Gothic" painted in the same year, also completed "Stone City Iowa" in 1930. In the painting, what was then the town’s general store sits on the right side next to the Wapsipinicon River. It’s a lovely, pastoral picture that captures middle America in the early 20th century.
No longer a store, General Store Pub is a treat. The limestone building constructed in 1897 is still a local fixture for its ambience next to the river, its live music, and of course its food and drinks.
The menu is an all-American mash-up of usual pub favorites, including burgers, pizza, and sandwiches. You can even make your burger an “American Gothic” and get a double patty for an extra $4. This being Iowa, you can also score a mean pork tenderloin sandwich.
Not to be missed are the appetizers, including The Tacklebox, a mix of waffle fries, fried mushrooms, and other fried goodies. It’s the perfect counterpart to a round of beers.
Don’t forget about dessert! You’ll find treats such as ice cream and brownie bites on the menu.
There is a double-deck patio in the back facing the river, a perfect outdoor setting for a meal with friends.
The dining room is cozy, retaining some of the features of the general store.
