Iowa is full of unique, one-of-a-kind restaurants, but nothing can quite compare to Fong's Pizza. Consistently at the top of the Best Pizza in Iowa lists, this spot has figured out how to make the best pies around... and you'd never guess their secret.
Fong's Pizza opened in 2009 in a spot that was previously occupied by King-Ying-Low, Des Moines’ oldest Chinese restaurant, established in 1908.
When the pizza shop opened, the owners wanted to pay homage to the historic restaurant, so they left much of the decor, and embraced a new concept: Chinese Themed Pizza.
Over the years, Fong's Pizza has been recognized for their impeccable balance between delicious pizza and their quirky theme - you'll want to try their an eggroll appetizer before deciding on your pie!
Their variety is another reason they're so famous - you'll find dozens of pies on the menu!
The most famous is probably their Crab Rangoon pie - but they also serve a delicious taco pizza, bacon popper and meatzilla pie!
There are plenty of vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free options on the menu as well. The Vegan Surpreme is to die for!
Personally, I think the General Tso's Pizza is heaven on a plate. Be sure to try something new whenever you go!
With the addition of their tiki bar drinks, Fong's has really hit it out of the park, and it's easy to see why this eatery is one of the most beloved in Iowa.
To truly understand the unique menu, you'll want to see it for yourself! You can find the original Fong's Pizza at 223 4th Street in Des Moines, and they've opened a second location at1450 SW Vintage Pkwy, Ste. 120 in Ankeny.
Fans of Fong's call themselves Fongolians, and all it will take is one visit to understand their loyalty and enthusiasm! It's no wonder Fong's Pizza has a list of accolades as long as the Great Wall of China - including praise from Alton Brown, Travel Iowa, and of course, making our list of 11 Of The Coolest, Most Unusual Places To Dine In Iowa.
