With several locations throughout the state, Bub's Burgers & Ice Cream is a popular family restaurant that got its start in the town of Carmel in 2003.
Its claim to fame is the Big Ugly, which is a one-pound hamburger patty (measured once cooked). If you finish the whole thing (bun and toppings optional), you get bragging rights and your picture up on the wall.
Guests can also get these burgers in half-pound, quarter-pound, and eighth-pound increments, and the way it's cooked is up to you (i.e. medium, well).
Uncooked, this beef patty starts out at 22 ounces and can be topped with any number of toppings including five different types of cheese and bacon.
You can get any burger from Bub's made with either beef or elk meat. All ingredients are fresh, and the buns are even made custom at a nearby bakery. The bun for the Big Ugly is a half a pound of bread.
Additional menu items include hot dogs which are either half a pound or a quarter pound. The restaurant also sells soup, chili, salads, chicken sandwiches, wings, and a mess of sides like sweet potato waffle fries, onion rings, cole slaw, baked potatoes, and more.
Don't forget dessert; it's in the name. If you have room for it after that one-pound hamburger, try the ice cream at Bub's. Guests can enjoy milkshakes, malts, pie with ice cream, as well as brownie a la mode.
In addition to the location in Carmel, there is a Bub's in Bloomington that opened in 2010 as well as one in Zionsville that opened in 2014. Over the years, it has received awards for best new restaurant and best burger, and it was even featured on the Travel Channel on "Man V. Food."
