There's nothing I love more than a hot cup of coffee and a cozy breakfast at a local diner. Fortunately for us Illinoisans, that's usually not too hard to find. Recently a new diner called Pink Owl Cafe opened in my town, and after getting several strong endorsements, my husband and I decided to check it out one Saturday morning. I'm so happy we did because this hidden gem brunch spot in Berwyn, Illinois is about to be added to our regular rotation.
Pink Owl Cafe, located at 2713 Ridgeland Ave., is a brunch and breakfast diner specializing in coffee and classic morning dishes with a Mexican twist.
Inside, the small dining room has only a handful of tables, but the space is maximized and decorated beautifully in pink from top to bottom.
Flower-wrapped chandeliers, exposed brick walls, glittering counters, gold mirrors, and a tiled ceiling all add layers of charm and detail that put this place on the map.
One of the first things you'll notice is the featured flower wall that also acts as a selfie photo station. Photos are sent via text to customers. I thought this was such a fun touch that not only added to the aesthetic, but also gave customers a cute memento to take with.
Hanging on the flower wall is a neon sign with a nod to the restaurant's owl theme reading, "Owl You Need Is Coffee."
And while the decor is a feast for the eyes, the food and coffee are certainly a feast for the soul. My husband and I each ordered a cafe de olla — delicious Mexican-spiced coffee that instantly relaxes you. We also decided to try one sweet and one savory item, including the mouthwatering chilaquiles drenched in cheese, fresh cilantro, and green salsa and topped with an egg.
It had a fiery kick to it, which was perfectly balanced by the strawberry croissant, which comes stuffed with fresh strawberries, bananas, and perfectly piped mascarpone cheese. I could seriously eat one of these daily. And if strawberry banana isn't your jam, there's a blueberry version as well.
Before we left, my husband got another coffee — this time an iced Americano. He said it was the best he's ever had. The next dish on our bucket list here is the Nutella banana waffle, though truly I'd love to try one of everything!
