You might remember reading our first article about quaint mom and pop-style eateries in Idaho. But with all the warm, small-town cooking happening in our state, you knew that we would discover more hometown gems to share with you! Each starting as the fulfillment of a dream, these are the places that never fail to serve up a comforting meal – the kind of meal that reminds you of childhood, and where everyone knows you by name.
While they may never get national recognition, here are some local favorite ma and pa type restaurants that are worth bragging about.
1. Nummy'z, Challis
Small town, tiny restaurant, HUGE flavor! Travelers continuously rate this quirky eatery as the best hidden gem in Idaho. If you're in the mood for delicious, locally-owned food that strays from the traditional burger and fries, Korean tiki-style BBQ is your answer -- especially when those delicious eats are prepared fresh and traditional.
2. Connie's Restaurant and Saloon, Island Park
Congenial, Western-style cooking, delicious prime rib and knockout desserts are what you'll find here at this quaint restaurant! Couple Jim and Connie Funkhouser previously owned the Island Park Lodge, but recently opened this country diner, which features fresh-cut steaks and homemade soups.
3. Blue Plate Cafe, Hayden
Generous portions, family-friendly vibes, and a spunky diner atmosphere makes this kitschy, homestyle breakfast stop a must-try on your next visit to Hayden.
4. Trudy's Kitchen, Idaho City
There are small-town restaurants... and then there's Trudy's. While most mom and pop establishments don't get much recognition, Trudy's is an exception! Renowned for Trudy's own handmade pie selections, whipped cream options, and even the biscuits and gravy, Trudy's is a can't miss Idaho institution.
5. The Rib Cage, Council
In the world of mom and pop restaurants, the Rib Cage in small-town Council has quickly earned a coveted spot on the list of Idaho's best. With impressive barbecue served alongside more than the usual cookie-cutter sides, owner Mike shows even top-tier restaurants how good cooking should be done.
6. Jumbo's Cafe, Pocatello
For great food and welcoming conversation, you'll want to visit Jeri's Jumbo's. And if you also love massive plate-sized pancakes and giant scones (because who doesn't?), this is the place to be!
7. Egg Factory, Nampa
The Egg Factory's humble, family-oriented beginnings found unexpected success in the Treasure Valley and has quickly become a local Boise and Nampa go-to. Their lemon-poppyseed pancakes are simply divine, and quirky named dishes show that this husband and wife team have a sense of humor.
8. Deli George, Boise
This all-too-often overlooked multi-generation restaurant will serve you the best and freshest sandwich of your life. Odds are, you'll even meet one of the "Georges" on your visit, taking the true mom and pop experience to the next level!
With so many chain restaurants around these days, these cozy eateries are a breath of fresh air! Did we miss any of your favorites?
