Tucked away on Hawaii Island’s Hamakua Coast in the sleepy former Hamakua sugar plantation town of Honomu is a prolific bakery that serves up the most mouthwatering spreads, breads, pastries, cookies, and more. Welcome to Mr. Ed’s Bakery, a one-of-a-kind shop you’ll want to visit again and again.
When owners and married couple Dean and June Edmoundson moved to Hawaii from the mainland in 1990, Dean was immediately taken with the local bananas found across the island and started baking banana bread for his family and friends. Pies, cookies, and cobblers started soon after, and in 2000, Mr. Ed’s Bakery was opened in the century-old building that was once home to Ishigo Store & Bakery.
The bakery equipment has been used for decades, and not much has changed since the building was constructed more than 100 years ago. With wood shelves, ceiling fans, fluorescent lights, and 10-foot tall ceilings, Mr. Ed’s Bakery may not look like much, but we guarantee the treats created here will satisfy your taste buds in a way you never thought possible.
You’ll find everything from cinnamon rolls and bear claws to homemade pies and a variety of scrumptious cookies at Mr. Ed’s Bakery. In fact, the sheer variety of creations at Mr. Ed’s will amaze you. Depending on when you visit, you will find four kinds of bread, a dozen different fruit turnovers, nearly 30 types of cookies, and more than 20 other pastries.
But it’s the jams, jellies, sauces, butters, chutneys, mustards and marmalades that make Mr. Ed’s truly stand out in a crowd. These homemade spreads have quickly become the main attraction at Mr. Ed’s, filling an entire wall of wooden shelves.
In total, there are nearly 150 varieties of spreads to choose from. With distinct island influences, including guava, lilikoi, and pineapple, and mango, you’re sure to find a new favorite spread here at Mr. Ed’s. Dean is constantly experimenting with different flavor combinations, and the creations are incredible. Think lilikoi and chocolate, mountain apple and li hing mui, and purple sweet potato and haupia. He even creates a spread made with "the rarest fruit on Earth," a fruit that was created when his wife’s grandfather crossed a tangerine with a grapefruit. Dean calls it tangeyfruit.
Oh, and did we mention that in addition to a mind-boggling variety of pastries, cookies, and spreads, you can also order shave ice as big as your head? Yum!

Why We Love It: It's taken several trips for me to figure out my perfect "weekender bag that's TSA approved," but I've found my perfect carry on with the TOBIQ Colorado 30L.
