In our opinion, some of the best Hawaiian food is found in the neighborhood mom and pop restaurants. Take a look at Helena's Hawaiian Food in Honolulu - it's one of the best places to eat in Hawaii, and one of the few restaurants in the state to have earned the James Beard Foundation's Regional Classic Award.
Helena’s Hawaiian food has been serving up delicious home-cooked food since 1946. It's located at 1240 N. School Street, in Honolulu.
This isn't a fancy place...but it's a warm, friendly, family place.
Helen Chock opened her restaurant in Honolulu in 1946. It's now run by her grandson, Craig Katsuyoshi, and his wife Kalei. They're keeping the family tradition of delicious Hawaiian food alive.
One of the house specialties is Pipikaula ribs, which will melt in your mouth.
The other popular specialty here is Kalua Pig.
You can't go wrong with the fried butterfish, either.
You can order items a la carte, but the best way to enjoy all the Helena's has to offer is by getting one of the family-style dinners. In addition to a few main courses, you'll get side dishes of rice and poi.
Of course, haupia is served with every meal.
Bring cash with you - Helena's doesn't take checks or credit cards.
This place is all about family. Bring yours soon!
