With little more than 1,200 residents, the sleepy town of Hana is one of Hawaii’s most remote places to visit. Located on Maui’s southern shore, Hana is reachable only by the long, winding road that is Hana Highway. Featuring 59 bridges and 620 curves through lush jungle, the infamous 64.4-mile Road to Hana that stretches from Kahului to Hana is popular not for the destination but for the incredible journey it takes to get there. But we’d like to think there are some hidden gems to uncover in Hana, like Braddah Hutt’s BBQ Grill, a truly magnificent hole-in-the-wall eatery that serves up some of the best plate lunches you’ll find in all of Hawaii.
This hole-in-the-wall eatery is - quite literally - a food truck in the middle of nowhere, but that doesn’t mean that it’s not worth the journey.
Patrons sit on folding chairs under a tent while an extended family slaves away over hot grills to prepare some of the island’s best barbeque.
The atmosphere is that of a neighborhood cookout rather than a high-class restaurant, with prices ranging from $8 to $13 for generous portions served on a paper plate with a plastic fork.
Favorite dishes include their famous barbecue chicken, shrimp pasta, and killer fish tacos. But don’t be too surprised if you come for something particular and don’t find it - the menu changes daily.
According to the eatery’s website, world-class chef Hatota Tehiva opened Braddah Hutt’s as a way to raise money for a family trip back to Tahiti to visit relatives still living there, but it has since turned into a Maui hot-spot.
The restaurant is located at 5305 Hana Hwy near Kaihalulu Bay, and is open from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., but don’t take the closing time too seriously - the operation shuts down as soon as they run out of food.
While on your way to eat at Braddah Hutt's, be sure to check out all of the amazing things Hana Highway has to offer you.
