When it comes to dining out at ethnic restaurants, most people's minds go to common spots, like Mexican or Italian. However, there are plenty of other cultures with delicious cuisines that everyone should try. One of our favorite ethnic restaurants in the Peach State is Manaweenta. This tasty little place in Athens doesn't look like much from the outside, but it serves some of the best Ethiopian food in Georgia. If you've never tried Ethiopian food before, don't be intimidated: it's delicious and the staff here are happy to help you pick out some items!
Mannaweenta is tucked away on the east side of Athens, a few minutes outside of downtown.
It's definitely outside of the campus district where most visitors tend to hang out, so it's easy to miss.
Inside, the place doesn't look like anything particularly special. You're greeted with simple decor and some photos and decor on the wall from Africa.
The menu can be intimidating-looking if you aren't familiar with Ethiopian food, but the staff are extremely helpful.
There are a variety of dishes here, with plenty of different meats and vegetables. The staff are happy to explain what is spicy and what's a little more mild.
Dishes are served with rice or injera.
Injera is a fermented bread that tastes a little like sourdough. It has a unique, spongy texture that meshes with the main dishes perfectly.
There are tons of vegetarian options here. Picky eaters might be alarmed at the exotic choices, but the perfectly-seasoned food is incredible and enjoyable to any palate.
Best of all, Manaweenta is quite affordable! Most of the dishes are under $10 a plate.
For more information about Manaweenta, check out the restaurant's menu. There are descriptions for each dish, but trust us - they're all amazing!
