Savannah, Georgia is my hometown, and I love it immensely, but I've got to say, it can feel a little weird to visit after a decade of living away. It's a tourist town through and through, and even though I'm technically a local, a visit to River Street or any of the other popular touristy areas makes me feel like I am not. The influx of out-of-town residents has been a boon to the area's economy, but it's also easy to feel like an outsider when you are surrounded by tourists and you don't technically reside there anymore. When I am in town, I love to stop by places that are a little off the beaten path, the hidden gems that are loved by locals but not too familiar to most tourists. One of my favorite places for a simple bite to eat is The Cuban Window. It's located downtown in the historic district, but a little outside of the area that most tourists frequent, and it's a colorful place with fresh, delicious food that locals love and cherish.

The Cuban Window is in a gas station parking lot, and it's pretty easy to miss (despite the bright pink sign). The exterior is pretty nondescript, and you'd never guess at the deliciousness hiding inside.

I absolutely love the decor in here. The Art Deco vibes are so incredibly fun, and I just adore the bright colors.

Much of the business here is to-go, but I often eat inside because I love the pink bar and yellow bar stools. Yellow is my favorite color, and it's pretty darn impossible to feel unhappy when you're dining on a flamingo-pink bar, especially if you're dining on superb food like this!

Everything here is cooked fresh, so if you go late in the day, you may find that some things are sold out. On a recent visit, I was disappointed to learn that the fried yucca was sold out, but it gave me the opportunity to try a new side. I went with tostones, fried plantains that are sold at The Cuban Window in both savory and sweet flavors. They were incredibly addictive and absolutely delicious.

My typical favorites here are the coconut curry chickpea meal (pictured above) or the black bean sliders. Both are excellent, and the menu is full of plenty of other choices, whether you're seeking sandwiches or mojo pork.

The authentic eats here will have you thinking you left Savannah and magically traveled to Miami!
