The southern United States is practically bursting with famous, beloved seafood dishes, from she-crab soup to shrimp and grits and Lowcountry boil - and plenty of places to get them at. It should come as no surprise, then, that you'll have no trouble tracking down a delicious plate of fried shrimp or oysters. One of the best spots in Georgia to get your fill of crispy, golden-brown seafood is The ShellHouse.
The ShellHouse Seafood Restaurant is a locally-owned Savannah establishment located about 20 minutes from the city’s historic district and just off of Interstate 95. The lakeside eatery, which serves extremely generous portions, has received rave reviews online especially for its fried fare.
The ShellHouse has its origins in another restaurant which was opened by the Garrett family, the owners of the seafood eatery. The first restaurant, which began serving customers in 1983 on nearby Wilmington Island, tragically burned down only six months after opening. The Garretts then moved into a vacant building called The Oasis of Georgia which used to house the Georgia Welcome Center. Since 1988, the family has been serving up delicious southern Georgia meals using recipes passed down from generation to generation.
Some of the most celebrated dishes at The ShellHouse include its fried seafood. Patrons of the restaurant can get everything from catfish to oysters and shrimp served crispy-brown.
If you feel you just can’t choose, don’t worry! The Shellhouse’s fried seafood options can be paired together to create the meal of your choosing. Boiled shrimp and crayfish are available, as well.
While fried shrimp and oysters are big sellers at The Shellhouse they still don’t match the popularity of the restaurant’s Lowcountry boil.
A delicious mix of potatoes, corn, sausage, and a pound of boiled shrimp, The Shellhouse’s Lowcountry boil is the seafood restaurant’s number-one seller. Be sure to check it out and see for yourself why it’s so popular.
If you still have room in your tummy after polishing off your oysters or catfish filet, don’t miss The Shellhouse’s peach cobbler. This gooey dessert is made fresh every afternoon and is a good way to end a meal in the American South.
After your meal, stretch your legs by exploring the grounds behind the restaurant.
As The Shellhouse is situated on a lake you are likely to see turtles, fish, and even an alligator or two! Buy some food from the dispenser near the lake and have fun feeding the fish.
The American South, including Georgia, is chock-full of great restaurants where you can chow down on delicious seafood fresh from the Atlantic Ocean. If you're in search of a fried seafood place in particular there is no better choice in Savannah than The ShellHouse. You'll be sure to leave satisfied...and very full.
