Cap’s Place in Lighthouse Point is one of Florida’s oldest restaurants and a national landmark that dates back to the 1920s.
Sitting on an island, Cap’s Place is unique as it can only be reached by Cap’s motor launch on the Intracoastal waterway.
Back when it was first built, Cap’s Place was on a floating barge, known by many as a gambling casino and rum-running restaurant.
Some famous and infamous faces frequented this restaurant over the years, including notable American gangster Al Capone, who attained notoriety during the Prohibition era.
But beyond drinking rum with gangsters, Cap’s Place also became famous for having some deliciously fresh seafood thanks to such close proximity to the water.
While there are certain staples on the menu, like the smoked fish dip, fresh Okeechobee hearts of palm salad, and Maryland-style crab cakes, you can always call ahead for the night’s offerings.
The Steak of the Day is usually a fan favorite, especially when it comes with veggies, a potato, a soup, freshly baked rolls, and a salad!

For instance, a story told by one of the owners involved Henry Flagler who stopped by the restaurant to eat a favorite dish, fresh pompano. Later on, the word pompano was written on one of his railroad maps, with the location later becoming Pompano Beach, Florida.
