Are you in the mood for a culinary adventure? Luckily, there’s no shortage of fantastic eateries to explore throughout the Motor City, and the arrival of a new year brings fresh opportunities to get out and take your taste buds on an unforgettable journey. While it would be impossible to list all of our favorite restaurants throughout Detroit, here are nine must-visit spots to dine at in 2020.
Please note, Frita Batidos Detroit, Ivanhoe Cafe, Lady of the House, and Magnet are currently or temporarily closed.
1. Frita Batidos Detroit (66 W Columbia St)
Perhaps you’ve visited the original Frita Batidos location in Ann Arbor, but the arrival of the Detroit eatery brings an entirely new flavor to the Motor City. This Cuban-inspired spot is brimming with delicious eats, most notably its mouthwatering chorizo burgers and churros. If you’re in the mood for a healthy dose of flavor and an out-of-the-box meal, this is the place for you.
2. Detroit Shipping Company (474 Peterboro St)
Want to bring a splash of uniqueness to your dining adventures in 2020? You’ll adore Detroit Shipping Company, which is situated within a building made of converted shipping containers. When you drop by, you’ll find a variety of food court-style eateries, each carefully selected to fit the vibe of this one-of-a-kind spot. From cocktails to creative tacos, there’s something here for everyone.
3. Ivanhoe Cafe (5249 Joseph Campau Ave)
If you’re searching for a Detroit classic that will provide you with a sense of nostalgia while delivering some of the city’s tastiest fare, Ivanhoe Cafe is ideal. You might not have spent much time at this historic locale during previous years, but we think this should change in 2020 — after all, the cafe offers everything from Polish cuisine to simple sandwiches, and you’ll feel right at home when you step inside.
4. Highlands (400 Renaissance Center Floor 71)
Elevate your dining experience in a literal sense when you eat at Highlands, which recently opened its doors on the 71st floor of the Renaissance Center. Gaze out upon marvelous views of the surrounding skyline as you peruse a menu full of fantastically prepared steak options. Whether you’re planning a date night or simply looking for a new way to experience the city, Highlands will undoubtedly delight.
5. La Noria Woodfired Bistro (5517 Michigan Ave)
At first glance, this laid-back Italian eatery might not catch your eye, but you’ll be impressed as you begin your meal. Often overlooked in favor of more famous Italian restaurants, La Noria deserves praise for its broad selection of pasta and pizza that will have your taste buds begging for more. The service is phenomenal and the food will leave you craving more, so why not stop by in 2020?
6. Flowers of Vietnam (4440 Vernor Hwy)
If you’ve managed to survive without trying the food at Flower of Vietnam, you’ll certainly want to change that in the new year. Don’t let its unassuming exterior surround you: this hip spot serves some of the most delicious Vietnamese food you’ve ever tried, along with a full bar and some unique side dishes. Dig into a fantastic new experience as you sample bok choy, caramel chicken wings, and more.
7. Duly’s Place (5458 W Vernor Hwy)
We know, we know — any true Detroit has been frequenting Duly’s Place for decades, but we couldn’t resist including it on our list. After all, ringing in a new year is only improved when it combines longstanding traditions with new experiences, and Duly’s Place is a true Motor City classic. Open 24 hours per day, this cash-only joint serves coney dogs, burgers, and diner fare to die for.
8. Lady of the House (1426 Bagley St)
Lady of the House has created quite a buzz throughout Metro Detroit, earning it a spot on our list of must-visit eateries.
